The South and Gay Marriage

One of the biggest political issues of recent times has been that of gay marriage. One of the biggest battlegrounds of this has been the South. This has had many arguments from both sides, but one of the most amusing effects is when Texas managed to ban marriage entirely.

In my opinion, I think that the South has largely been opposed to gay marriage because of the Protestant religious sensibilities. Most of the places that have allowed same-sex marriage for any period of time are in more irreligious and liberal states like California, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. So what do you guys think about same-sex marriage in the South?
